Explosion, Museum of Naval Firepower, at Priddy’s Hard, Gosport has some great activities planned this July 2011. Bring the family and join us for a weekend of fun and science, including Rockets, Torpedoes, and of course Extreme Explosions!

There’s plenty to do throughout the day, with lots of ‘hands on’ activities for all the family, including:

• Build your own Torpedo from everyday junk to test in our special pond.
• Demolish our target with fruit and veg fired from a mini-trebuchet. (It’s a bit like a catapult!)
• Compete to sink each other’s ‘battleship’ as the traditional game takes on a giant size, chemical twist.
• Can you crack the safe? Use Water Bombs to demolish our purpose built polystyrene wall safe.
• Balloon Bloodhounds – Can you design a balloon powered super car to travel at high speeds?
• Build a Rocket with the team from Action Stations in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
• Stick your fingers in your ears as the always-popular Wavy Navy fire the Museum’s big gun.
• And many more activities involving missiles, rockets and Explosions!!!

So for an unforgettable start to the Summer Holidays and a weekend of bangs and laughter, come and take part in ‘Extreme Explosions’ at Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower. Your ticket will also include free admission to Explosion’s award-winning galleries.

Tickets for this event can be purchased by telephone: 023 9250 5600. 10% discount available for tickets purchased in advance, or full price on the gate (cash only). Family Ticket £20.00 (2 adults and upto 3 children).

Further Activity Information:

Fruit Flinging
See what fruits and vegetables work best as missiles by launching them into the air with our medieval-style trebuchet (catapult.) Visitors will learn how the properties of a missile (size, shape, weight) affect its trajectory and impact – and get to smash things up!

Battleships
The traditional game, but much bigger, with a chemical twist! Visitors will learn about how explosions can be caused by mixing particular substances together to produce an expanding gas. Can you ‘hit’ your target and sink your opponent’s ship?

Working with weapons
Using PC-based simulation software which is used by British Armed Forces, visitors will learn about the military context of weapons and explosives and how personnel are trained to operate in these situations.

Rockets
Visitors will learn about Forces, Newton’s Third Law of Motion and how they apply to rocket motors.

Junk torpedoes
Build your own torpedo out of everyday items and test in our special pond. Visitors will experience the process of designing, building and testing a prototype torpedo and will learn how particular design features affect its ability to function effectively.

Safe cracking
Use Water Bombs to demolish our purpose built Polystyrene Wall! Visitors learn about how energy is transferred in an explosion and will consider how a range of variables affect the end result.

Bloodhound land speed record vehicle
Visitors will consider the design of an object which travels at high speed and about key challenges to its design and manufacture e.g. propulsion, aerodynamics, wheels. All powered by balloons!

Other activities are expected to be announced in the near future. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page.
